The first week of Great Lent – the beginning of our Lenten journey to heaven – begins with us asking for forgiveness from everyone and forgiving everyone.
The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is read on the first four evenings of Great Lent. St. Andrew wrote the canon as a personal meditation, and it has been described as a dialogue between St. Andrew and his soul, urging humility and repentance. With St. Andrew’s words at these services, the Church helps us start our own journeys through Great Lent.
On the first Friday of Great Lent, an exceptional ancient service with a penitential character is celebrated: the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. At the end of this service, koliva (a dish of boiled wheat with honey and nuts) is blessed in remembrance of the miracle performed by the martyr Theodore the Recruit and to strengthen us on our Lenten journey.
We look forward to seeing you at these services during the first week of Lent:
