This year August is particularly rich in feasts that draw us closer to salvation, bringing peace to the soul and God’s protection.
The first Sunday of the month—August 2nd—marks the Feast of Saint Elijah. The Prophet Elijah is one of the most revered saints of the Old Testament; he was taken up to Heaven alive: “suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire… and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven” (2 Kings 2:11). According to Holy Scripture, only Enoch had been taken to Heaven alive before him (Genesis 5:24). Both are destined to appear again before the Second Coming of Christ. This Feast honors the very first saint to be venerated in Rus’. A cathedral church was built in Kyiv in the 9th century, and Princess Olga erected a church dedicated to the Prophet Elijah in the north of Rus’. As a witness of the faith, the Prophet Elijah helps those who seek his aid to remain steadfast in their faith and to lead a righteous life. Liturgy at 10 am (confession at 9:30).
The second Sunday of the month—August 9th—marks the commemoration of the Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon, who grants his healing aid to the faithful. This is the day of Orthodox medical professionals; we offer them our congratulations and ask for divine assistance in their labor. Liturgy at 10 am (confession at 9:30).
On August 19, we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast day is dedicated to the transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor, appearing to his three disciples, Peter, John, and James, in His Divine Glory. We invite you for vespers on August 18 at 6 pm and for Liturgy on the August 19 at 10 am followed by the blessing of fruit.
We commemorate the death or falling asleep of the Most Holy Theotokos the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary on August 28. Holy Tradition tells us that Christ came for his Mother who without suffering entered into eternal life. Vespers on Thursday, August 27 at 6 pm and Liturgy on Friday at 10 am (confession at 9:30).
On the last Sunday of the month, August 30, the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. (Confession at 9:30 a.m.). During the service, special prayers will be offered for the beginning of the school year, asking for God’s help for students and teachers on this important day.
