A relatively quiet month in the liturgical year, October gives us a chance to reflect on the teachings of the Church. On October 9, the Church commemorates the Repose of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, who was greatly loved by Jesus. Apostle John witnessed Christ’s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, was with Him at the Last Supper, stayed with Him as Christ was interrogated by the high priests, and stood with the Mother of God at the foot of the Cross when Jesus Christ was crucified. The Apostle John wrote his Gospel in the year 95 teaching Christians to love Christ and one another.
On October 14, the Church celebrates the Protection of the Theotokos. In the mid-tenth century at a church in Constantinople, the Mother of God appeared and held her veil over the faithful who were praying, protecting them from visible and invisible enemies. In the Troparion for the day we sing, Encompass us beneath the precious veil of thy protection; deliver us from every form of evil by entreating Christ, thy Son and our God, that He may save our souls.
We give thanks to God and to those who answered our requests for donations for needed repairs to our church building. We are happy to report that repairs have been made to the outside of the cupola tower and that the damaged interior drywall will be replaced soon. We continue to ask for your donations for purchasing and installing a new boiler for heating the church building during the winter months. Thank you to those who have generously given to our building repair and renovation fund! If you haven’t yet donated, please help with your financial support. Donations may be made online and at church.
Are you looking for another way to support your church? Our quarterly volunteer clean-up day is Saturday, October 3. Please come to help with cleaning and maintenance in the church and church hall. Working together and with God’s help, we will keep our church a beautiful and enduring spiritual home. May God continue to bless us all!
We hope to see you in church on Sundays and on this special day:
